Orta and its lake

Visit Lake Orta

Set among wooded mountains and surrounded by a riviera rich in history and art, Lake Orta is the most evocative of Italian lake basins.

Enclosed by wooded mountainside and encircled by shores rich in history and art, Lake Orta is one of the most evocative spots in Italy.

The most illustrious and representative place in the whole area is Orta San Giulio, a small charming medieval town, considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of Italy. Built on the slopes of the ridge overhead, Sacro Monte and its twenty chapels tell the life story of Saint Francis of Assisi; a gem of architecture, culture and spirituality, it has been declared a Unesco heritage site

The Island of San Giulio with its splendid Romanesque basilica and the monastery of the Benedictine order lies suspended over the waters of the lake.

The romantic little town Pella is on the other side of the lake, dominated by the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, built on the rocky granite promontory jutting out over the lake.
